While our southern neighbours are bunkering down in puffer jackets and woollen socks, things here are just starting to heat up. Winter is almost here and it’s all about balmy beach days and nights spent cosying up in the Hinterland. The ocean, which rarely dips below a lovely 20 degrees is crystal clear, and our calendars are packed with food festivals, art shows and cultural events just waiting to be explored.

Up early we headed to our favourite lesser-known beachfront destination on the Sunshine Coast, Moffat Beach. Moffat Beach has a distinct vibe that differentiates itself from its more famous neighbours like Kings Beach and Dicky Beach. While long popular among locals and beachgoers from South East Queensland, Moffat Beach has remained a lesser-known hidden gem for interstate and overseas visitors.

The birds are waking and singing, and you can feel a faint breeze as you sit still awaiting the morning light show. The peacefulness of watching the sun begin to illuminate the sky is unparalleled. Just observing the rise of the sun is a morning meditation unto itself. Starting your day in this way will give you a deep sense of calm and balance, and set you up for a great day ahead.

Moffat Beach has garnered a reputation as one of the top dog-friendly beaches on the Sunshine Coast. Off-leash access is between 4pm and 8am daily (Beach Access 270 to 276) but if you and your four-legged companion fancy dipping your toes and paws outside of these hours, take a short drive to Currimundi or Wurtulla Beach which offer dedicated off-leash sections.

Breakfast was calling and tucked away in Moffat Beach, away from the main village, is One Block Back. Hidden in the back blocks this is one quirky eatery. You arrive at a big shed with lots of plants at the entrance( some for sale) and a lovely covered outdoor area.

This rustic café is decked out with corrugated iron walls, a cabinet packed with delicious RAWR treats, herb gardens out the front and back, and a steady stream of in-the-know locals. With a brunch menu that’ll rival any of your fave spots, pull up a stool inside or nab an oversized picnic table on the deck and get ready to stuff yourself silly.

The outside dog friendly area is dry and protected by excellent full plastic blinds. This would have to be one of the best dog friendly cafes during inclement weather, plus it’s quirky and interesting. The staffs are very friendly and make you feel at home. In summary, Moffat Beach’s OBB is something different in terms of atmosphere and location to your normal café fair. The coffee and food were excellent. What was once a tin shed hidden in suburbia, is now one of Sunshine Coast’s most distinctive cafes

Tony and Kim acknowledges the Sunshine Coast Country, home of the Kabi Kabi and the Jinibara peoples, the Traditional Custodians, whose lands and waters we all now share.

We recognise that these have always been places of cultural, spiritual, social and economic significance. The Traditional Custodians’ unique values, and ancient and enduring cultures, deepen and enrich the life of our community.

We wish to pay respect to their Elders – past, present and emerging, and acknowledge the important role First Nations people continue to play within the Sunshine Coast community.
