Walk From Brisbane Southbank to Brisbane West End, Queensland. Australia
If you’re after a true taste of Brisbane it’s in the South! There are plenty of activities to get up to within the banks of South Brisbane. Okay so I am being Captain obvious here listing South Bank as a place to walk, yet I know many people who have visited South Bank but never gone beyond. South Bank though is a great starting or ending point for walks along the river. Brisbane’s RiverWalk covers more than 20 km of roads, bridges, parks, and paths along the River. As such, it is a great option if you want to tour the city on foot. The City of Brisbane provides a RiverWalk map that makes planning your personal trail easy. While the Riverwalk officially starts at the end of Boundary Street under the Story Bridge, the most popular place to access it is via the city.
Today we trekked from the car park under Captain Cook Bridge. You need to get an early start because the parking spot is very popular and has a 4 hour limit. The first stop after leaving the car park is the Maritime Museum. This is considered to be one of Brisbane's best museums.
From the museum your hit South Bank, which is Brisbane's great success story. It combines public green space, a free artificial beach, an artificial rain forest, lots of restaurants, some takeaway shops, markets on the weekends and of course the Wheel of Brisbane. Following the river you next pass the Cultural Precinct which includes the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) and several museums, galleries and a library.
The walkway then moves over the water while passing The Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA), which is Australia's most popular art gallery. Unless a big exhibition is on, they have a great collection of indigenous art works on permanent display. From the Gallery of Modern Art you have a few options. For those who feel like continuing on, the possibilities are practically endless: take the Go Between Bridge and go via the Bicentennial Bike/Walkway on the other side to Toowong or head over the Kurilpa Bridge and into or under the CBD. We continued onwards to the inner-city suburb of West End which is a lively mixture of cultures and the bohemian heart of Brisbane. The quirky local style can be described as a fusion of multicultural, alternative and vintage and the shops, restaurants and atmosphere reflect this suburb's eclectic personality.
On any weekend stroll through the Davies Park markets where aspiring designers peddle their wares amongst organic grocers, food vendors and coffee houses. We looped around the Milk Factory and the Milk Factory Kitchen & Bar in a hertiage-listed corner hotel. Heading forward some more we hit the Gallery Of Modern Art and retrace the same path back to the Maritime Museum.
