Just over an hour’s drive from Brisbane, this slice of paradise feels like a true escape—without the hassle of ferries or long travel days.

We packed up for a spontaneous Sunday day trip with our pup Shari, and what unfolded was one of those effortless, sunshine-filled days that remind you why Southeast Queensland is such a special place to explore.

Where is Bribie Island?

Bribie Island sits just north of Brisbane in the Moreton Bay Region and is the only island in Queensland connected to the mainland by bridge. That means you can simply drive straight across—no ferry bookings, no waiting around, just easy access to coastal beauty.

The island offers a mix of calm bay waters on the western side and rugged ocean beaches on the eastern side, making it perfect for everything from relaxed swims to 4WD adventures. But for this trip, we stuck to the calmer, more social side of Bribie—perfect for a cruisy day out.

A Morning at Red Beach

Our first stop was Red Beach, and honestly, there’s no better way to start the day.

Red Beach is a somewhat wild and woolly stretch of Bribie Island beach accessed via a vegetation-shrouded path leading from the car park.

There’s absolutely no amenity here, just sand, water and vine-covered dunes but it’s doggie heaven for pooches who literally have 8 kilometres of beach to walk or swim, albeit most of it on-leash. After a couple of kilometres the beach meets up with Woody Bay, around the corner from which is the Woorim Beach dog off-leash section so it’s also great for long dog-owner walks

Shari was absolutely in her element from the moment we arrived. Tail wagging non-stop, she darted between the shoreline and the sand, soaking up every second of freedom. Red Beach is one of the most popular off-leash dog beaches on Bribie, and it shows—there were plenty of other pups living their best lives while their owners enjoyed the peaceful morning sunshine.

There’s something special about those early hours at the beach. The air is crisp, the crowds are light, and everything feels just a little slower. A few people were out walking, some casting a line into the passage, and others simply sitting back with a coffee, watching the world wake up.

And of course, no great beach morning is complete without a little indulgence—so Shari got to enjoy some early “spirits” of her own (don’t worry, the dog-friendly kind). Safe to say, she approved of the day’s direction.

Breakfast Stop at Bribie Island RSL

After a solid dose of sunshine and salty air, we made our way to the Bribie Island RSL for breakfast.

Located in Bongaree, the RSL is more than just a club—it’s a central hub for locals and visitors alike. With sweeping views over the water and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, it’s an easy choice for a casual meal.

We kept things simple with bacon and eggs, fresh coffees, and of course, a pupachino and treats Shari—because no one gets left out on our adventures.

The food was exactly what you want from a morning stop: hearty, satisfying, and served without fuss. But what really stood out was the atmosphere. Friendly staff, a steady buzz of conversation, and that unmistakable coastal vibe made it a place you could easily linger longer than planned.

And that’s exactly what happened.

We ended up chatting with another couple who shared our love for cruising holidays. What started as a quick hello turned into a full-blown conversation about favourite cruise lines, destinations, and future travel plans. It’s funny how often travel brings like-minded people together—you never know who you’ll meet over breakfast.

Exploring the BIDCA Markets

From there, we headed over to the BIDCA Markets—and if you’re visiting Bribie on a weekend, this is a must.

Run by the Bribie Island and District Community Arts Association (BIDCA), these markets are a vibrant showcase of local creativity. Held regularly throughout the year; they bring together artists, makers, and small businesses from across the region.

As you wander through the stalls, you’ll find everything from handmade jewellery and artwork to homewares, crafts, clothing, and unique gifts. There’s a real community feel here—this isn’t a polished, commercial market, but rather a genuine gathering of locals sharing their talents.

One of the highlights of our visit was when Kim unexpectedly stumbled across her friend Gail, who was running a stall selling a range of ladies’ clothing. It’s moments like that—completely unplanned and personal—that make these outings feel extra special.

The markets are also a great place to chat with stallholders, hear their stories, and pick up something truly unique. Whether you’re browsing or buying, it’s easy to spend a good chunk of time just soaking it all in.

A Stroll Along the Boardwalk

After the markets, we slowed things down with a walk along the nearby boardwalk.

This stretch along the waterfront offers beautiful views across the Pumicestone Passage, with gentle breezes and plenty of spots to stop and take it all in. Pelican's glide across the water, boats drift by, and the whole scene feels effortlessly relaxed.

We ducked into a couple of local shops along the way, browsing everything from souvenirs to coastal-inspired homewaresIt’s the kind of easy wandering that makes a day trip feel complete—no rush, no strict plans, just following wherever the day leads.

Sweet Finish at Bribie Island Kenilworth Bakery

To wrap things up, we made our way to the Bribie Island Kenilworth Bakery—and this place is an absolute treat.

An extension of the iconic Kenilworth Bakery in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, this Bribie location brings the same reputation for oversized donuts, freshly baked goods, and indulgent treats right to the island.

If you’ve heard of the famous “Kenilworth donuts,” you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about. These aren’t your average bakery snacks—they’re massive, over-the-top creations filled with everything from classic custard to wild flavour combinations.

Inside, the bakery has a fun, welcoming vibe with plenty of options to choose from—pies, pastries, sweets, and great coffee to match. Whether you’re grabbing something quick or settling in for a break, it’s the perfect way to end a day of exploring.
