Slow Roads & Country Charm: Our Day Trip to Boonah and Kalbar
Slow Roads & Country Charm: Our Day Trip to Boonah and Kalbar
Saturday started the way all good adventures do — early, a little chilly, and full of excitement. With the Brisbane air finally cooling down, we packed the car, grabbed Shari, and hit the road in search of that perfect country escape. The Scenic Rim was calling, and this time, our destination was the charming rural town of Boonah.
Located about 1 hour and 20 minutes southwest of Brisbane (roughly 90 km from the northside), Boonah sits nestled in the heart of the Scenic Rim, surrounded by rolling farmland, mountain ranges, and national parks. It’s a town rich in history, originally settled in the late 1800s and known for its dairy farming roots. Today, it’s a vibrant country hub blending heritage charm with boutique shopping, local produce, and relaxed country hospitality.
Our first stop was the Boonah Country Markets — the perfect way to ease into the day. Held regularly and loved by locals and visitors alike, the markets showcase everything from homemade treats and fresh produce to handmade crafts and unique gifts. Kim couldn’t resist grabbing some fudge (honestly, who could?), while Shari soaked up all the attention, making new furry friends and enjoying plenty of pats from fellow market-goers.

After a good wander through the stalls, we made our way into Boonah’s main street — and it was buzzing. There’s something special about a country town that feels alive, and Boonah absolutely delivers. Locals were out enjoying the fresh air, day-trippers strolling the footpaths, and the shops were full of character.
Some of the must-visit spots along the main street include:
Dugandan Hotel (historic country pub vibes)
Flavours Cafe (popular for breakfast and coffee)
Boonah Books & Art (a hidden gem for creatives)
The Emporium Boonah (homewares and gifts)
Duck Junction (a standout boutique for fashion and gifts)
Kim was in her element, popping in and out of shops, and couldn’t leave without picking up a pair of pants and a fresh summer blouse from Duck Junction — a great little boutique with a mix of stylish and relaxed country fashion.
By the time lunch rolled around, we were more than ready, so we headed to the beautifully renovated Commercial Hotel, home to the Boonah Brewing Co. This place is a must-visit. The historic pub has been transformed into a modern brewery while still keeping its country charm. With a wide selection of craft beers brewed on-site, a spacious beer garden, and a welcoming atmosphere, it’s a great spot to unwind.
Tony went straight for the burger — no surprises there — while Kim chose the buffalo cauliflower salad with chicken, which was fresh, flavour-packed, and a great lighter option. And of course, Shari was more than happy to help out with a few chips.
With full bellies, we jumped back in the car and made our way toward Kalbar, just a short 10-minute drive from Boonah. Our first stop was the stunning Sunflowers on Kents.
Located in Kalbar, this seasonal attraction is a must-see when in bloom. Entry is usually around $6 per person (prices can vary depending on the season), and you can wander through rows of vibrant sunflowers, take photos, and even pick your own to take home. There are also food stalls, coffee vans, and plenty of space to relax and soak in the views.
It felt like we had only just been there for the Sunflower Festival a couple of weeks earlier, but it never gets old. Kim picked a handful of sunflowers to bring a bit of sunshine back home with us, and honestly, it’s one of those simple experiences that just sticks with you.
Just a few kilometres up the road, we made our final stop at the Scenic Rim Farm Shop — and this place is an absolute gem. It’s a beautifully curated country destination combining local produce, boutique shopping, and a relaxed café setting.
Inside, you’ll find:
Fresh local produce and gourmet goods
Artisan products and gifts
A welcoming café with indoor and outdoor seating
Dog-friendly spaces (big win for Shari)
Kim made a beeline for Her Herd Boutique, located within the farm shop precinct, and walked out with a new pair of jeans — no surprises there either. Meanwhile, Shari was loving life, roaming the open spaces and enjoying the dog-friendly vibe while we relaxed with a coffee.
All in all, it was one of those perfect day trips — easy, relaxed, and full of those little moments that make exploring Queensland so special.
