There's something magical about chasing the sunrise up the Sunshine Coast, especially when the reward is beachside breakfast, three different markets, and a dog who gets more pats than we do. We woke before dawn, packed the car with market bags, water, and Shari (our ever-patient market mascot), and pointed the nose north while the sky was still painting itself in oranges and pinks. The drive up the Sunshine Motorway is one of those simple pleasures — quiet roads, coastal glimpses, and that feeling that you're stealing a head start on the day. By the time we hit Peregian Beach, the sun was just cresting the horizon, turning the surf into a shimmering ribbon.

Tummies rumbling, we pulled into Peregian's village and headed straight for Salty Mermaid Cafe on David Low Way. Salty Mermaid is one of those new-generation beach cafes that nails the essentials: friendly service, plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and a menu that leans into classic breakfast favourites with a coastal twist.

The vibe is relaxed and welcoming — the kind of place where staff greet you at the door, there's a help-yourself water station near the entrance, and the food display cabinet is full of tempting treats (including soft-serve ice cream for later). Toilets are onsite with a key from the counter, which is always a win when you're starting a long market day.

Our orders were straightforward but satisfying. Kim kept it classic with bacon, eggs, and mushrooms — simple, well-cooked, and exactly what you want after an early start. I went for the breakfast burger, a hearty stack that's become a Sunshine Coast staple: think beef or bacon patty, egg, cheese, and all the fixings on a brioche bun. Full and caffeinated, we walked down the street to the Peregian Beach Markets. Held on the first and third Sunday of each month from 7:00 AM to 12:30 PM, these markets are set in Peregian Park on Kingfisher Drive — literally opposite the beach.

The location alone makes them special. You're browsing stalls with the sound of surf in the background, ocean breezes keeping things cool, and that laid-back Peregian vibe everywhere you look. For over 25 years, the market has supported the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club, which adds a nice community feel to your purchases.

Stallholders offer a mix of art, craft, upcycled and recycled goods, handmade homewares, jewellery, clothing, and local produce — the kind of unique finds you can't get in a mall. With over 100 stalls on busy days, it's easy to lose an hour here just wandering.

We took our time, chatting to makers, admiring hand-thrown ceramics, and resisting the urge to buy everything. The market wraps up at 12:30 PM, but we aimed to beat the mid-morning rush and still have time for the next stops. After a final loop past the beach-facing stalls, we window-shopped a few of Peregian's boutique stores before heading south to Maroochydore.

Next on the agenda: Fishermans Road Markets in Maroochydore. Held every single Sunday from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the corner of David Low Way and Fishermans Road, this is the kind of market where you come for one thing and leave with a boot full of random treasures.

With up to 128 stalls, Fishermans Road is a true locals' market. You'll find fresh fruit and vegetables, second-hand clothing, bric-a-brac, pet treats, hand tools, books, plants, seedlings, homemade toys, furniture, aquarium fish, and a whole lane of food vendors selling everything from Asian street food to sausage sizzles, slushies, and espresso coffee.

This is where Kim comes alive. She's in her element weaving through the lanes, spotting hidden gems, and haggling politely for nick-nacks and household oddities. Shari, meanwhile, gets more pats here than at any other stop — stallholders and shoppers alike can't resist a friendly market dog.

We spent a good hour browsing every lane, from the produce end (fresh local fruit and veg, eggs, and honey) through to the pre-loved clothing racks and the bric-a-brac tables stacked with everything from vintage crockery to random tools. It's the kind of market where you might buy a $5 plant, a $10 book, and a $15 lamp without planning to — and somehow it all makes sense in the car on the way home.

Fishermans Road Markets — Quick Details

Caloundra Street Markets: Boutique Shopping and Street Fair Vibes

Our third and final market stop was the Caloundra Street Fair on Bulcock Street. Running every Sunday from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, this is the Sunshine Coast's largest street market, with more than 120 unique stalls plus over 50 permanent boutiques, cafes, and specialty shops open alongside it.

The whole main street is closed to traffic, turning Bulcock Street into a pedestrian-friendly shopping and dining precinct. Stalls spill across the road selling arts and crafts, jewellery, wellness products, plants, flowers, gourmet street food, and fresh produce, while the permanent stores offer everything from fashion to homewares.

This is one of Kim's favourite markets for good reason. It combines the treasure-hunt energy of a street fair with the polish of a boutique shopping strip. You can grab breakfast from a food van, browse handmade jewellery, then pop into a permanent store for a more curated shopping experience — all within two blocks of Bulcock Beach.

At Rayanna, a size-inclusive womenswear boutique specialising in natural-fibre coastal fashion, Kim found the perfect pink ribbon jewellery piece — a subtle nod to breast cancer awareness that still felt stylish and wearable. Next stop was The Luxe Bungalow, where she picked up a new pair of shorts (they stock denim and linen styles in relaxed, beachy cuts). Not done yet, she added two more pairs from Soho Bay Caloundra, another local fashion store with a focus on easy, holiday-ready pieces.

By the time we finished, we'd covered the full market stretch, grabbed a few snacks, and watched a bit of the live entertainment that often pops up on Bulcock Street. It's the kind of place where you can easily turn a market trip into a full morning-out — breakfast, browse, beach walk, repeat.
