Island Hopping in Paradise: Sailing the South Pacific on Quantum of the Seas
Island Hopping in Paradise: Sailing the South Pacific on Quantum of the Seas
There is unmistakable electricity in the air when a massive, state-of-the-art superliner drops anchor in your home port for the very first time. For months, the buzz across Australian cruise forums and travel circles was palpable. Royal Caribbean made headlines by deploying two of its premier Quantum-class and Quantum-Ultra sister ships down under: sending *Anthem of the Seas* to take over Sydney Harbour and positioning the magnificent *Quantum of the Seas* right at our doorstep at the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal in Pinkenba.
As self-proclaimed ocean wanderers who never miss a chance to chase the sun, we couldn't resist. The second the inaugural schedule dropped, we secured our booking for *Quantum of the Seas*' absolute first cruise out of Brisbane to kick off the summer season. Ahead of us lay a 9-day South Pacific escape—a journey packed with tropical ocean vistas, high-tech entertainment, world-class dining, and lush island adventures.
Grab your favourite beverage, sit back, and come along for the ride as we step aboard one of the most technologically advanced cruise ships sailing southern waters.
The Floating Wonder: Exploring Quantum of the Seas
To understand why this voyage felt so special, you have to appreciate the marvel of engineering that is *Quantum of the Seas*. Spanning a length of 1,141 feet (347 metres) and weighing in at over 168,000 gross tons, this behemoth accommodates over 4,000 guests across 16 action-packed decks. It isn't just a ship; it’s a living, breathing luxury resort city suspended on water.
Onboard Thrills & Innovative Spaces
Royal Caribbean revolutionized cruise entertainment on the Quantum class, filling the ship with features you won't find anywhere else at sea:
* **RipCord by iFLY:** A skydiving simulator set inside a 23-foot vertical glass wind tunnel right on the top deck. You get the adrenaline-pumping sensation of freefall while floating above the endless sea.
* **North Star:** A jewel-shaped glass observation capsule extended on a giant crane arm that lifts guests 300 feet above sea level for panoramic 360-degree ocean views.
* **The SeaPlex:** The largest indoor active space at sea. Depending on the hour, this massive venue transforms from a full-sized basketball court and roller-skating rink to a bumper car arena and circus school.
* **FlowRider:** A 40-foot-long surf simulator that pumps 30,000 gallons of rushing water every minute, allowing guests to try their hand at bodyboarding or stand-up surfing.
* **Two70:** A multi-million-dollar revolutionary space featuring floor-to-ceiling glass ocean walls by day that transform into high-definition digital screens (Vistarama) and robotic projection screens (Roboscreens) by night.
Culinary Delights & Retail Therapy
When it comes to dining, *Quantum of the Seas* functions as an international culinary tour. Beyond the main dining venues and the sprawling buffet at the Windjammer, the ship boasts an impressive line-up of specialty dining options:
* **Chops Grille:** Royal Caribbean’s hallmark American steakhouse serving hand-cut prime steaks and fresh seafood.
* **Jamie’s Italian by Jamie Oliver:** Rustic, freshly made pasta dishes and famous meat planks crafted in collaboration with the renowned chef.
* **Izumi Sushi & Hot Rocks:** Authentic Asian flavors, handcrafted sushi rolls, and traditional Japanese cuisine.
* **Chef’s Table:** An exclusive, multi-course epicurean experience paired with fine wines hosted by the Executive Chef.
* **Bionic Bar:** A futuristic cocktail lounge where two robotic arms mix, shake, and serve custom cocktails ordered directly via iPad tablets.
For retail therapy, the Royal Esplanade forms the vibrant indoor heart of the ship, lined with designer boutiques, jewelry stores, Swiss watchmakers, tax-free beauty shops, and duty-free spirits.
Home Away from Home: Stateroom 9564
Our home for the next 9 days was **Stateroom 9564**, located mid-ship on Deck 9. Opting for a Balcony Room on a high deck is always our top recommendation for Pacific cruising.
The layout was exceptionally well-thought-out, maximizing every square meter with clean, Scandinavian-inspired design accents. Our room featured a plush Royal King bed fitted with premium linens, a comfortable double sofa bed, a dedicated vanity desk with ample lighting and charging ports, an interactive HD television, full climate control, and a modern bathroom equipped with an enclosed glass shower and clever built-in storage shelves.
The highlight, of course, was stepping through the floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors onto our private balcony. Furnished with comfortable reclining chairs and a small table, Stateroom 9564 provided the ultimate front-row seat to the open ocean—perfect for quiet morning coffees and watching breathtaking sunsets over the water.
Embarkation Day: Rain, Patience, and VIP Privileges
Our departure morning arrived with an uninvited guest: relentless, torrential rain pouring across Southeast Queensland. Eager to begin our holiday hassle-free, we had pre-booked Carpark 1 right alongside the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal. Having your vehicle parked mere steps from the terminal entrance proved to be an absolute blessing given the wet weather downpour.
However, the rain inevitably slowed terminal logistics to a crawl. Offloading incoming passengers from the previous leg while processing thousands of newly arriving guests created heavy congestion. Vehicles backed up, rain drizzled over queue paths, and enthusiastic travelers crowded the concourse, leaving little room for disembarking guests to clear out comfortably.
The Key Experience: Is It Worth It?
Thankfully, we had pre-purchased **The Key**—Royal Caribbean’s premium VIP access package.
Despite the general terminal delays outside, the distinct privileges of The Key made all the difference. When boarding calls began, VIP guests, Pinnacle/Suite guests, Diamond members, and The Key cruisers were called into the priority lanes well before general embarkation groups. Once inside the terminal, security clearance and passport control took mere minutes. By 1:45 PM, we walked through the gangway and officially set foot on *Quantum of the Seas*.
First Hours Onboard
Our very first stop after stepping into the atrium was completing our mandatory safety muster check-in via the Royal Caribbean mobile app—a process that now takes under two minutes.
With muster complete, we bypassed the crowded Windjammer buffet (which was brimming with hungry cruisers escaping the wet weather outside) and headed straight to the Main Dining Room for **The Key Exclusive Welcome Lunch**. Sitting down to a relaxed, waiter-serviced gourmet meal featuring Signature Chops Grille cuts while crew members safely whisked our carry-on bags away to our stateroom was worth every single cent of purchasing The Key.
By 5:00 PM, the lines were cast off and *Quantum of the Seas* quietly glided out of Brisbane. Because of the ongoing rain, the usual outdoor pool deck sail-away party was muted, but nobody's spirits were dampened. Guests crowded into the interior lounges, toasted glasses of champagne, and cheered as the coastline slowly faded into the misty twilight.
After getting our bearings and unpacking in Stateroom 9564, we headed to the main dining room to finalize our dining preferences. We opted for **Early Dining **, which gave us the freedom to eat early evening to watch the early theatre shows rather than being locked into a rigid late seating slot.
The first night headliner in the Royal Theater was Australian stand-up comedian **Brett Blake**. Known across Australia for his iconic mullet, relatable bogan humor, and quick-witted crowd interactions, Blake delivered an hour of unvarnished, belly-laugh comedy that had the full theater roaring. We wrapped up night one sipping signature cocktails in the Music Hall, listening to the live cover band, before taking a late-night stroll around the quiet decks and turning in for a well-deserved rest.
Life at Sea: Cruising the South Pacific Waters
The next two full days were spent navigating the open South Pacific Ocean. With no ports on the horizon, we shifted effortlessly into full relaxation mode. Days at sea are the true heartbeat of any cruise holiday—it’s all about pacing yourself between absolute tranquility and non-stop action.
Days Filled with Fun and Sun
Our morning routine started peacefully. We took advantage of early morning guided stretching and meditation sessions, followed by brisk walking laps around the running track as the warm ocean breeze washed over us.
Throughout the days, we kept as busy (or as lazy) as we wanted:
* **Trivia & Games:** Testing our general knowledge during lively morning trivia battles at the Schooner Bar.
* **Table Tennis & SeaPlex Action:** Engaging in friendly ping-pong tournaments inside the climate-controlled SeaPlex.
* **Show Rehearsals:** Sneaking an insider peek at the cast and technical crew practicing high-flying acrobatics and choreography for the upcoming production show, *Starwater*, in Two70.
* **High-Tech Thrills:** Watching brave cruisers take on the body-boards at the FlowRider and float inside the iFLY glass wind tunnel.
Outstanding Service & Great Company
Dining each evening became an absolute highlight of our voyage. We were assigned to a wonderful dining team in the Main Dining Room: our lead waiter **Fnu** and assistant waiter **Sally**. Night after night, their impeccable attentiveness, warm smiles, and detailed culinary recommendations elevated every meal.
Adding even more spice to our dinners was our seated proximity to a lively group of American travelers. Loud, hilarious, and endlessly outgoing, our table neighbors **Evon, Frank, Kathleen, and Mary** kept us entertained with outrageous stories of their down-under travel mishaps, turning every dinner into a celebratory feast.
Evening Headliners: Impressions & Acoustic Engineering
Spotlight: Jeff Tracta> >
On our second formal sea night, the Royal Theater hosted **Jeff Tracta**, a world-renowned celebrity impressionist and singer who gained international fame as Thorne Forrester on *The Bold and the Beautiful*. Tracta’s show is an absolute tour de force: combining rapid-fire comedy with astounding vocal shapeshifting, he transitions seamlessly through over 100 iconic musical voices—from Bruno Mars, Andrea Bocelli, and Billy Joel to Freddie Mercury and Elton John—all backed by high-definition video backdrops. It was an unforgettable performance that earned a resounding standing ovation.
Production Highlight: Sonic Odyssey
On our third sea night, we took our seats for Royal Caribbean’s original production show, **Sonic Odyssey**. Inspired by the vision of Earth Harp creator William Close, this theatrical spectacular bridges music, performance art, and structural architecture. The entire Royal Theater transforms into an instrument itself, with massive harp strings stretching over the audience's heads to the balcony. Featuring the Earth Harp, a Drum Wall, violin dresses, high-energy vocalists, and aerial acrobats, *Sonic Odyssey* creates a wall of sound and light unlike anything else at sea.
Tropical Paradise: Port Vila & The Iririki Island Day Escape
On the fourth morning of our journey, we awoke to vibrant turquoise waters, lush volcanic hillsides, and tropical sunshine. We had arrived in Port Vila, the vibrant capital of Vanuatu!
Because larger cruise liners anchor in Port Vila’s bay rather than tying up to a commercial wharf, tender boats were deployed continuously throughout the morning. Thanks once again to **The Key**, we bypassed the long tender ticket lines and boarded one of the very first tender boats ashore.
Island Sanctuary: Iririki Island Resort
Having visited Port Vila on past voyages, we decided to bypass the standard bus tours to Mele Cascades or the Blue Lagoon. Instead, we spent our day at **Iririki Island Resort & Spa**—a private, 69-acre tropical island paradise located just a 3-minute ferry ride across the harbor from Port Vila’s main waterfront.
After catching the resort ferry from the downtown jetty, we arrived at Iririki and purchased our Day Passes at reception. Getting off the tender early paid off enormously: for two glorious hours, we had the stunning **Resort Pool** completely to ourselves! We floated in the crystal-clear water, grabbed chilled cocktails from the swim-up bar, and soaked up the breathtaking views across the bay while soft reggae music drifted through the palm trees.
As other savvy cruisers slowly began arriving later in the morning, we set out to explore the rest of the island resort. We walked along elevated timber pathways through lush rainforest gardens, taking in views from the cliffside dining terraces and oceanfront bungalows. We also checked out the second pool area—the **Sunset Pools, Bar & Restaurant**—which offered sweeping views of *Quantum of the Seas* resting anchored in the harbor in the distance.
Exploring Downtown Port Vila
By mid-afternoon, we hopped back onto the ferry to explore downtown Port Vila. We strolled along Kumul Highway, ducking into local Duty-Free stores (**Fung Kwei** and **Prouds**) to browse local handicrafts, island rum, and fresh vanilla beans.
We wrapped up our port day with a walk down the Port Vila Seafront Esplanade. The open-air handicraft markets were bursting with color—local weavers and artisans selling hand-carved wooden sculptures, woven palm bags, colorful mother-of-pearl jewelry, and bright tropical shirts. After chatting with friendly local stallholders and picking up a few souvenirs, we boarded our tender boat and made our way back to our floating home ready for the next chapter!
Evening Entertainment: Starwater
After another delight-filled dinner in the Main Dining Room with Fnu, Sally, and our hilarious American dining buddies, we headed to Two70 to catch a portion of Royal Caribbean's flagship entertainment show: **Starwater**.
*Starwater* is a visually stunning fusion of human artistry and cutting-edge technology. Created exclusively for Two70, the show weaves video projection mapping across the 100-foot-wide Vistarama glass walls while six giant Roboscreens twist, dance, and sync with live acrobats, singers, and dancers. It explores the connection between human emotion and the cosmos, serving up a surreal sensory overload of music, lighting, and aerial feats.
Mystery Island: Pristine Waters & Giving Back
The following morning brought us to one of the most idyllic spots in the South Pacific: **Mystery Island** (*Inyeug*), an uninhabited islet at the southern tip of Vanuatu’s Tafea Province. Ringed by coral reefs, white sand beaches, and crystal waters, it is a true barefoot paradise.
Once again, using our Key priority tender access got us onto the island early. Rather than spending money on organized tours, our plan was simple: dedicate the day to pure swimming, relaxation, and giving back.
Community Donations: Bringing School Supplies
Before diving into the ocean, our first mission was to drop off two bags of school supplies we had collected and brought along. Remote island communities across Vanuatu often face shortages of basic educational materials, so bringing items like children's storybooks, reading flashcards, lead pencils, colored pencil sets, sharpener packs, and stationary kits is a small gesture that makes a tangible impact. The local volunteers who receive these donations ensure they reach primary schools on the neighboring inhabited island of Aneityum.
Swimming & Island Exploration
We walked across the middle of the island—which takes under five minutes—to find a quiet stretch of beach on the outer reef side. I jumped straight into the clear water, while Kim spent a good 10 minutes carefully edging in with her classic reaction: *"It's cold!!!"* Although there was a light ocean breeze, once you submerged, the water was pure bliss.
As the morning progressed, islanders from Aneityum arrived on wooden outriggers loaded with fresh coconuts, handmade crafts, and supplies. Naturally, our quiet stretch of shoreline gradually filled up as more ship tender boats arrived.
We took that as our cue to dry off and explore the local market setup along the shaded paths. The islanders set up temporary stalls selling hand-braided hair services, tropical flower leis, sarongs (kaliko), and wood carvings. Kim picked up a fresh, chilled coconut to sip as we completed a full walking loop around the entire island.
By 2:00 PM, we took a tender boat back to *Quantum of the Seas*. Heading back slightly earlier meant we could enjoy the ship's pools and hot tubs while most guests were still ashore. We did notice quite a few fellow passengers returning early or skipping the island altogether—which felt like a missed opportunity given Mystery Island's pristine beauty and the vital tourism income it provides for the Aneityum local community!
Nighttime Comedy: Ventriloquy Reimagined
Back onboard, after another evening of laughter in the Main Dining Room, we caught night headliner **Dean Atkinson**. A world-class Australian comedy ventriloquist who rose to national prominence on *Australia's Got Talent*, Atkinson completely reimagined the art form. Instead of relying solely on traditional wooden puppets, Atkinson brought unsuspecting audience volunteers up on stage, fitted them with remote-controlled mouth masks, and transformed real people into walking, talking human dummies! Watching fellow cruisers lip-sync hilarious routines against their will had the theater rolling in tears of laughter.
Nouméa, New Caledonia: French Riviera of the Pacific
On day six, we docked at the commercial shipping port in **NoumĂ©a**, the vibrant capital of New Caledonia. The port authority provided free shuttle bus transfers directly into the city center terminal and information hub. Without booking formal tours ahead, we designated today as Kim’s official shopping day!
We purchased pass tickets for the local Hop-On Hop-Off shuttle bus to explore the coast:
Stop / Location | Highlights & Experience
**Port Plaisance** Skipped the first stop (Moselle Market) and hopped off at Port Plaisance. Kim browsed charming local fashion boutiques, used a quick currency converter app on her phone, and found a gorgeous new French-style skirt for her collection.
**Baie des Citrons & Anse Vata** | Boarded the bus past Lemon Bay (Baie des Citrons) toward the Aquarium stop. We walked along *Promenade Roger Laroque* toward *Place de la Promenade*, where Kim scored a stylish top from the retail strip beneath the Hilton Noumea La Promenade Residences.
**La Bodega del Mar & Le Roof** Strolling further down the over-water promenade brought us past **La Bodega del Mar**, a popular tapas bar suspended over the water, and **Le Roof**, NoumĂ©a’s famous iconic over-water fine dining restaurant offering front-row views of jumping fish and marine life.
**Lemon Bay Promenade** We wandered along the waterfront curve of Lemon Bay, lined with palm trees, bustling open-air cafes, ice-creameries, and French bistros before hopping back on the bus to the main terminal.
**Place des Cocotiers** Ended our city excursion with a relaxed stroll around *Place des Cocotiers*, the square heart of downtown Nouméa filled with flame trees and historic gazebos, before returning to the ship late afternoon.
Evening Dining & Sequins & Feathers
For dinner, as we weren't overly hungry after a day of casual snacking around Nouméa, we opted for a light, informal meal at the **Windjammer Buffet**.
Later that evening, we gathered in the Royal Theater for **Sequins & Feathers**, an original Royal Caribbean production celebrating the timeless glamour, rhythm, and spectacle of classic showgirls. Featuring lavish feathered costumes, high-octane choreography ranging from can-can to contemporary jazz, and soaring live vocals, the cast delivered a dazzling homage to Broadway and Vegas revue shows.
Return Journey to Brisbane: Sea Days & Festive Thrills
Our final sea days heading back toward Australia were filled with our favorite shipboard rhythms: early morning swims, trivia battles at Schooner Bar, grab-and-go coffees while people-watching along the Esplanade, friendly indoor dodgeball and ping-pong at the SeaPlex, and peaceful afternoon reading sessions on our private Deck 9 balcony. We also spent hours watching fellow guests brave the FlowRider surf simulator, iFLY wind tunnel, and rock-climbing wall.
Wonderland Imaginative Cuisine
On Halloween night, we booked a specialty dining experience at **Wonderland**, Royal Caribbean’s whimsical, avant-garde restaurant inspired by *Alice in Wonderland*.
The concept is visually creative: menus are presented as blank scrolls revealed by dipping a paintbrush in water, and dishes are categorized by elements (Sun, Ice, Fire, Water, Earth, and Dreams). While the presentation—featuring smoked deviled eggs in glass globes and visual candy creations—was creative, our overall experience felt slightly underwhelming compared to the glowing YouTube reviews we had watched prior to the cruise. Some dish elements felt more focused on novelty than flavor harmony, but it remained a fun experience to try once!
The rest of Halloween night was electric: guests went all out with creative costumes for the shipwide **Halloween Parade & Dance Party** in the Esplanade, turning the atrium into a vibrant costume ball.
Final Night Headliner: The Price is Right
Our final evening featured Royal Caribbean's high-energy adaptation of **The Price is Right** in the Royal Theater. Complete with authentic game wheels, product price guessing, and exuberant audience participation, watching fellow passengers "come on down" to win cruise credit and prizes provided a fun, laughter-filled finale to our stage entertainment.
As dawn broke the next morning, *Quantum of the Seas* glided under clear blue skies back into the Brisbane River and docked smoothly at Pinkenba.
Heartfelt Thanks & Acknowledgments
A cruise voyage is defined by the human connections made along the way. We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to:
* **I Putu**, our wonderful Stateroom Attendant, for keeping Stateroom 9564 pristine every single day with flawless towel origami and warm greetings.
* **Fnu & Sally**, our main dining team, whose warmth, laughter, and top-tier service made every dinner feel like a royal feast.
* **Evon, Frank, Kathleen, and Mary**, our hilarious American table neighbors, for sharing endless stories, belly laughs, and great cheer.
* **Kim's retail customers from Coles**, whose familiar faces and friendly chats prior to sailing added to the excitement of embarkation!
Cruiser’s Survival Guide: Pro Tips & Hints
To help you get the absolute most out of your next Royal Caribbean voyage on a Quantum-class ship, here are our top tried-and-tested tips:
* 🌅 **Breakfast at the Solarium Bistro:** Skip the chaotic morning lines at the Windjammer Buffet and head straight to the Solarium at the bow of the ship. It’s an adults-only space with peaceful ocean views, fresh healthy options, and a far more relaxed atmosphere.
* 🏖️ **Pack Your Own Lightweight Beach Towels:** Bring a couple of distinctive microfiber towels for port days. It saves you from constantly checking out and returning heavy ship towels at the towel station, avoiding potential lost towel charges ($25 USD per towel).
* 🏊 **Time the Pools Right:** The main pools and hot tubs are virtually empty during early mornings (before 8:30 AM) and port days/late evenings. Peak afternoon hours will be packed with families and kids.
* 🧲 **Magnetic Hooks & Portable Camping Fan:** Stateroom cabin walls are metallic! Heavy-duty magnetic hooks are a game-changer for hanging lanyards, wet swimwear, day bags, and hats. Also, bringing a small rechargeable USB desk/camping fan (like our white detachable fan positioned right above the bed) keeps air circulating nicely all night.
* 🍽️ **Negotiate Specialty Dining Discounts:** Waiters often roam the main promenade and pool decks on Night 1 offering specialty dining packages. If they pitch a small 10–15% discount, politely ask for **30% off** or hold out—they will frequently match it to fill seats on early nights!
* 📱 **Download the Royal Caribbean App Early:** Complete your check-in, upload passport details, book show reservations, and complete your safety muster prior to stepping onto the ship to save precious holiday hours.
A Final Reflection: School Terms, Duck Hunting, and Cruise Etiquette
As seasoned cruisers, we love seeing families enjoy ocean holidays together. However, one observation shared by many fellow passengers on this voyage was the surprisingly high number of school-aged children traveling outside of official school holiday periods.
Many travelers deliberately book mid-term shoulder-season cruises expecting a quieter, adult-leaning ambiance while children are in school. When large groups of unsupervised kids are onboard during term time, it can alter the ship's dynamic.
This was particularly evident with the popular cruise tradition of **Cruising Ducks** (where passengers hide tiny rubber ducks around the ship for others to find and re-hide). What is meant to be a fun, respectful hide-and-seek game turned frustrating due to a specific group of children who ran wild through the decks daily, aggressively hoarding dozens of ducks in armfuls, ignoring the instructions on the tags, and preventing other young kids from finding a single one. Because of this selfish behavior, we stopped hiding ducks around public decks altogether and instead passed them directly to the delighted children in our dining group!
Final Words
Despite minor observations, our inaugural season voyage out of Brisbane on *Quantum of the Seas* was an absolute triumph. From high-tech stage performances and stunning island escapes in Vanuatu and New Caledonia to outstanding dining and lifelong memories, sailing from our home port proved that paradise is right on our doorstep.
Until the next ocean horizon calls—happy cruising!
