Main Beach To The Spit Noosa, Sunshine Coast. Australia
Noosa is one of our favourite places in Queensland with beautiful beaches, sunsets over the bay and mountains, great surf, beautiful headlands and bushwalks, marine life and wildlife galore, some of the best cafes and restaurants. There’s so much to see and do in Noosa, from walking the National Park, exploring the hinterland, surfing, paddle boarding, jet skiing, sailing, boat cruises, fishing, 4WDing, exploring Noosa north shore, horse riding, skydiving, swimming, yoga, massages, shopping, eating and did I mention just relaxing.
We parked at Noosa’s Main Beach which runs parallel to Hastings Street and is one of the only north-facing beaches on the east coast. The sparkling clean stretch of sand is the pride and joy of Noosa and the water is usually calm which makes it perfect for swimming. The tropical feel is completed by the Pandanus and palm trees that fringe the boardwalk, where locals and visitors alike love to go for a stroll, especially at sunset. We followed the board walk that runs parallel with the beach. You’ll pass the back of some fabulous restaurants and the Noosa Surf Life Saving Club Rooms. The short walk covers everything from beaches to gum trees, sea views to coffee stops.
The trail enters the western end of Hastings St and next you explore Noosa Woods. This is an off lead area for dogs and is a wonderful walk through the woods and down to the beach at the end near the mouth of the Noosa River (The Spit). Here you may see kite surfing, fishing charter boats heading out, fisherman on the river shores catching their breakfast, and a great relatively new beach that has just finished for everyone to enjoy.
The Spit takes you to the head of the Noosa River and the bar, with Noosa Groyne beach on the Eastern side and Noosa River wrapping around the Noosa Woods isthmus on the other. On its northern banks you can discover sheltered Dog Beach where dogs can swim and play off leads all year round.
Doggy Beach is a sublime slice of offleash doggie heaven tucked away in the Noosa Woods off the Spit end of Hastings Street. Arguably the most picturesque offleash dog beach in south-east Queensland, Doggy Beach is a large crescent of fine white sand at the wide mouth of the Noosa River, with pearlescent blue water, a backdrop of distant volcanic mountains, hemmed in by the bush of Noosa Woods. A manmade spit of sandbags marks one end and a waterfront path the other, with several (on-leash) bush tracks leading to the beach. An abundance of sticks makes for hours of playing fetch in the still waters and dogs can even paddle across to the sandbar at low tide.
The Spit is a lovely flat place for walking or recreation cycling with a myriad of tracks to explore. You can stay on the pavement for almost an entire loop, or go on the beach between the 2 rock walls of Groyne Beach. There are toilets, seats, shelters and large grassed areas to be found at Noosa Spit.
Sunsets over the river are amazing. If you are quiet you can also see a variety of birds including: Mangrove Gerygone, Mangrove Honeyeater, Tawny, Frog-mouth owls, as well as waders on sand banks.
Noosa National Park is beautiful any time of day, but at dawn you’re likely to have the place to yourself, except for a handful of morning walkers, as you watch the sunrise. One of the best spots we like to hike to is Hell’s Gate. You can get there either along the Coastal Track from the Noosa entrance or follow the trail from the top of the paved walkway at the end of Sunshine Beach. Hell’s Gate is a rocky high bluff that juts out into the Pacific Ocean in dramatic fashion, as is a truly magical place to watch the sunrise.
