Saturday Adventure – From Brisbane to the Hinterland

There’s something special about starting the weekend with an adventure, and this Saturday did not disappoint. We set off early from Brisbane, chasing the promise of a glowing sunrise at Coolum Beach. With our pup Shari happily in tow, it was the perfect mix of coast, country, and character-filled towns.

The Journey Begins – Coolum Beach & Breakfast

Arriving just as the first rays of sunlight touched the water, we gave Shari a run along the soft sand at Coolum Beach. Other locals and their pups were out too, enjoying the fresh sea breeze and the magic of morning light. 🐾🌅

After working up an appetite, breakfast was calling. Our favorite spot, Alley Cat Café, just a short stroll from the beach at 1/1748 David Low Way, Coolum Beach, is a must-visit for locals and travelers alike. Known for its laid-back vibe, great coffee, and hearty breakfasts, it was the perfect start to the day. Kim indulged in the Canadian Pancakes stacked with maple syrup and crispy bacon, while Tony went with the Brekkie Burger, the ultimate fuel for a day of exploring. Shari, of course, had her special side of bacon. 🥞🍔🥓

Roadside Icons – Big Pineapple & Palmwoods

With full tummies, we hit the road again, stopping at the iconic Big Pineapple 🍍—Queensland’s much-loved roadside landmark, perfect for a quick snap.

Continuing on, we rolled through Palmwoods, a little town with big character. A quick photo stop at Rick’s Garage (14-16 Margaret St, Palmwoods) was a must. Once an old service station, Rick’s Garage is now a legendary retro diner and bar filled with hot rods, classic cars, and Elvis vibes.

Just around the corner, we checked out The Shed Palmwoods, a treasure trove of antiques, collectibles, and quirky finds. No two visits are ever the same, with everything from rustic furniture to rare knick-knacks. Nearby, we popped into St Augustine’s Anglican Church Op Shop, a local favorite for bargain hunters with its shelves of preloved clothing, books, and curios.

Montville Magic – Shopping & Strolling

From Palmwoods, the road wound its way into the hinterland, leading us to the charming town of Montville. Perched high in the Blackall Range, Montville is famous for its artisan shops, galleries, and sweeping views across the Sunshine Coast.

We wandered down the main street, dipping into boutiques and specialty stores. Highlights included:

Crystal Multiverse – a haven for gemstones and healing crystals.

Montville Antiques – brimming with timeless pieces.

Chic & Sassy Boutique – fashion with flair. Kim’s wardrobe got bigger with a new summer top.

Belle Collective & Co – a sweet mix of gifts and homewares.

Clock Shop – one of our favorites, filled wall-to-wall with ticking treasures.

Bark and Brew – a dog-friendly café for coffee lovers and their furry friends. Shari got a new “Good Vibes” Cap.

Fudgyboombahs – irresistible handmade fudge that’s impossible to leave without. Kim couldn’t resist the Mint, Freckle, Salted Carmel Fuge to take home.

Maleny – Hinterland Charm

Back in the car, we made a quick stop at Lost Treasure Vintage Shop, an Aladdin’s cave of retro clothing, vinyl records, and vintage décor. Every corner felt like stepping into another decade.

We soon arrived in Maleny, buzzing with weekend day-trippers. The town’s creative spirit shines through its mix of boutiques, artisan shops, and foodie spots. We browsed Maleny Additions for homewares, the eclectic Boho Asylum, Fable Maleny for beautiful gifts, and Ark & Arrow, a boutique with bohemian flair. Kim walked out a Demin top. The lively Maleny Lane was full of energy, with street food, live music, and a festival-like vibe.

Ending the Day

By late afternoon, it was time to head home. Shari was curled up in the backseat, worn out from beach runs, pats from strangers, and meeting plenty of other pups along the way. The sun dipped low as Brisbane welcomed us back, wrapping up a day full of memories, laughter, and discoveries.

Summary

From the sunrise at Coolum Beach to the hinterland charm of Montville and Maleny, our Saturday adventure had the perfect mix of seaside relaxation, iconic landmarks, vintage treasure-hunting, and small-town magic. It was a beautiful spring day in Queensland—made even better with good food, great company, and our happy pup Shari. 🐶💛
