Markets, Meals & Magic: A Brisbane Saturday Adventure

There’s nothing quite like waking up on a Brisbane Saturday knowing adventure awaits — coffee, good company, and a happy pup in tow. This weekend, we explored some of our favourite local gems, from a cozy breakfast spot in Fortitude Valley to market-hopping by the river and finishing with a sunset by the bay.

Morning at Navy & Oak Café, Fortitude Valley

Our morning began at Navy & Oak Café, tucked away on McLachlan Street in Fortitude Valley. It’s a modern, pet-friendly café known for its relaxed atmosphere, leafy outlook, and quality local produce. With both indoor and shaded outdoor seating, it’s a favourite among dog owners — especially because of its dedicated dog menu featuring puppuccinos and healthy pup treats.

The human menu is just as impressive. Navy & Oak’s signature acai bowls, house-made breakfast burgers, and silky barista coffees are standouts. Kim started the morning with one of their famous Acai Bowls topped with fresh fruit and granola. I went for a simple burger that hit the spot, while Shari (our furry foodie) tucked into a chicken, egg, and sweet potato bowl, finishing, of course, with the cute “Navy Pup Cup.”

The friendly staff, dog-loving energy, and laid-back vibe made it the perfect start to the day.

Late Morning at Jan Powers Powerhouse Markets

Just a short drive away, our next stop was the Jan Powers Powerhouse Markets at New Farm Park, right by the Brisbane River and the iconic Brisbane Powerhouse. These Saturday markets are a Brisbane institution — a place where local farmers, artisans, and food vendors come together to showcase the best of the region.

More than 120 stalls fill the park grounds each week, offering everything from fresh fruit and veg to artisanal breadsgourmet cheesessmall-batch honeyflower stalls, and handmade crafts. The backdrop of the Powerhouse and the river makes it a perfect spot for a lazy morning walk.

While Kim explored the vendors (and picked up some tasty dog treats for Shari), me and Shari settled under the giant fig trees. We listened to live acoustic music, watched boats glide along the river, and enjoyed a few pats from kids passing by. The vibe was electric — people chatting, laughing, and soaking up the early summer sun.

Afternoon Vibes at Raby Bay Twilight Markets

By mid-afternoon, we were ready for stage two of our weekend exploration — the Raby Bay Twilight Markets in Cleveland. These markets are a bayside favourite, nestled right along the Raby Bay Harbour, surrounded by local restaurants and marina views.

Held once a month, the Twilight Markets transform the waterfront into a lively hub of boutique stallslocal food trucksgiftwarecandlesart, and plenty of sweet treats. With the sun setting over the water, it’s an unbeatable spot for late-afternoon drinks or a casual dinner.

We strolled through the stalls, taking in the soft glow of string lights reflecting on the water before grabbing a table to relax with a sunset drink. Dinner was classic and hearty — Hog’s Breath Café, overlooking the harbour — the perfect full stop to the bay’s golden hour.

Evening Magic at South Bank

Even after a full day, we couldn’t resist one last stop — South Bank. The area was buzzing, with families enjoying the warm evening, swimmers cooling off in Streets Beach, and market stalls adding their own sparkle to the night.

Adding a touch of festive fun was the annual “Inflatable Elves Hunt”, a playful scavenger-style activity where visitors search South Bank for giant inflatable elves hidden across the precinct. It’s an imaginative, family-friendly challenge that brings smiles to everyone who joins in — perfect for kids (and big kids at heart).

As we watched the Sumo Lomo light display shimmer across the water and the crowds moving beneath the fairy-lit trees, we felt that familiar Brisbane magic — the kind that turns an ordinary Saturday into a memorable story.

From a dog-friendly breakfast in Fortitude Valley to riverside markets, bayside sunsets, and festive fun at South Bank, this Brisbane day had it all — flavour, fun, and friendship. Whether you’re a local or visiting the River City, these stops are a must for your next weekend adventure.
