Sunrise at Moffat Beach to Caloundra Markets: Our Sunshine Coast Sunday Adventure

Sunrise to Street Fair

Our adventures kicked off with an early 5am rise, jumping in the Ute and cruising up the Bruce Highway to Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast—about 90km north of Brisbane, an easy hour drive past the Glass House Mountains. Moffat Beach, our fave spot between Dicky Beach and Kings Beach, shines with its sheltered cove, calm family waves, rocky headlands for whale watching (June-Nov), dog-friendly stretches, grassy picnics, and nearby playgrounds plus cafes.

Shari, our hyper pup, bolted across the sand, splashing in waves, greeting every dog and owner with tail wags. The beach hummed with dawn surfers, paddleboarders, and joggers—classic coastal energy.

Tummies growled, so we discovered Back to Basics Organic Cafe at Lake Kawana Blvd, Sunshine Coast (5min drive), overlooking the glassy lagoon with serene parklands. Their BTB's Full Monty (eggs, bacon, tomato, house made organic potato hash, chorizo) and Outback Protein Fold Omelette of three organic eggs, Nitrate-Free leg ham, caramelised onion, tomato, mushroom, capsicum, shallots and feta cheese, served with Organic Artisan Sourdough Bread  and fresh juices in a sunny, pet-friendly vibe.

Patchy clouds and light showers didn't faze us. We rolled to Caloundra Street Markets on Bulcock Street Boulevard (every Sunday 7am-1pm), 150+ stalls bursting with local honey, artisan soaps, fresh seafood, clothing, plants, hot empanadas, smoothies, and live buskers. Shari and I snagged a table at Tasty Sudaca for bold Peruvian coffee and her frothy puppuccino, while Kim scouted handmade jewelry and vintage finds. Pure outdoor bliss—nothing beats a Sunshine Coast Day trip!

Day Trip Tips

  • Arrive Moffat Beach pre-6am for parking and quiet waves; leash dogs outside dog zones.

  • Book Back to Basics Organic Cafe ahead on weekends; try their acai bowls too.

  • Markets cash-only for some stalls; visit early for best picks, then explore Kings Beach pools or Pumicestone Passage kayaking.
